The aftermath of a riot and fire at the Pest House, Waterlane Road, Bisley, in 1895. Locals attacked an ambulance arriving at the house carrying people suffering with smallpox from Stroud, they only wanted Bisley people to stay there! Officers can be seen to be armed with swords, this is probably the only image of Gloucestershire Policemen deployed with cutlasses. |
